An alternator functions to convert the rotation of your engine's crankshaft into electrical energy. The electricity is used to power the electrical components of your car and recharge your battery.
Attached to the engine's crankshaft is a reinforced rubber belt, called a serpentine belt, which carries the rotational energy needed for the alternator to operate. As the crankshaft rotates, so does a rotor inside of the alternator. This rotor is essentially a magnet, with two opposite charges - negative and positive. The alternator's design makes use of a concept known as "rotating magnetic field". Basically, as the rotor spins, it generates an electrical current.
The faster the rotor spins, the higher the voltage with be, but too much or too little voltage can cause damage to your car's battery. For this reason, cars are designed with voltage regulators. In essence, a voltage regulator ensures that the correct voltage is supplied to your car's electrical components.
Because of exposure to extreme temperatures, the internal parts of an alternator are subject to become worn and damaged. One of the most common causes of alternator failure is worn bearings. Because an alternator is relatively small (about the size of a coconut), its internal parts have to be quite smalll. The needle roller bearings used to ensure that the rotor spins smoothly and with as little friction as possible come under a lot of stress. As with all moving parts, the bearings will eventually become worn out.
There are a few signs that your alternator needs to be replaced. The first and most obvious is when your car battery dies while your car is running. If your serpentine belt is secure and operational, it's very likely that your alternator has stopped working. Another sign is if you hear a buzzing noise when your ignition is switched on, but the car isn't running. This is the sound of voltage from the battery running through the charging system. In this situation, you may be able to start your engine, but it is only a matter of time before your battery is drained completely.
