| Timing Belt Replacement and Maintenance
Advancements in rubber and improved engineering have contributed significantly to the overall quality and lifespan of Timing Belts. They are lightweight, quiet and require no lubrication, unlike their predecessor – the timing chain. They do however require periodic inspection and car manufacturers have a scheduled replacement interval – usually between 100,000 and 110,000 kilometers. It’s a good idea to do an inspection every 10,000 kms or so. To inspect the belt, first look at the outside of the belt to see if there are any tiny cracks in the rubber. One or two hairline cracks in the outer shiny coating of the timing belt are usually ok, but if you see lots of cracking on the surface this may indicate extreme wear. Next twist the belt over slightly to inspect the underside and teeth. A single broken tooth can be catastrophic. more...
