Belts & Hoses
Timing Belt Replacement and Maintenance

Advancements in rubber and improved engineering have contributed significantly to the overall quality and lifespan of Timing Belts. They are lightweight, quiet and require no lubrication, unlike their predecessor - the timing chain. They do however require periodic inspection and car manufacturers have a scheduled replacement interval - usually between 100,000 and 110,000 kilometers. It's a good idea to do an inspection every 10,000 kms or so. To inspect the belt, first look at the outside of the belt to see if there are any tiny cracks in the rubber. One or two hairline cracks in the outer shiny coating of the timing belt are usually ok, but if you see lots of cracking on the surface this may indicate extreme wear. Next twist the belt over slightly to inspect the underside and teeth. A single broken tooth can be catastrophic.

Also check the belt's play by twisting it - if you can turn it more than halfway around, it might have too much free play. Bear in mind, your timing belt is the most important maintenance item in your engine and breakage may cause engine damage. It is the sole component that keeps the camshaft and crankshaft in sync. Timing belt replacement at regular intervals is a lot less expensive and aggravating than waiting for it to break. For your car's maintenance schedule consult the owner's manual. Bottom-line - don't hold off on timing belt replacement. If it breaks or shreds, you could be looking at some serious repair bills.

Radiator Hose

Old radiator hoses or loose hose clamps can cause your engine coolant to leak, which could lead to overheating and expensive auto repairs. Have your radiator hoses periodically and replace them if they appear aged or are leaking coolant. There are two hoses that attach to the radiator: an upper hose at the top of the radiator and a lower hose at the bottom. With the engine cold, squeeze each hose. If the hose feels "crunchy" or brittle, it could need replacing. Check the radiator hose clamps at either end of both hoses. If the hose is damp or wet at the clamp, tighten or replace the clamp. The clamps should be tightened enough so that the radiator hose cannot be turned or moved. Check the hose for cracks, tears, or frayed ends. If you find any, replace the radiator hose.
