Making a turn in your vehicle may seem like a simple process from the driver's seat but that turning of the steering wheel sets a couple of important front end components into motion. While the tie rod and ball joint work together they are two separate components when it comes to auto repair - together they ensure your car can safely steer left and right while hitting bumps at high rates of speed.
The tie rod is part of the steering mechanism in your vehicle - it transfers force (the turning of your steering wheel) from your steering center link or rack and pinion to the steering knuckle on the wheel which makes your car turn. The tie rod is adjustable to allow you to set your vehicle's alignment angle.
A worn out tie rod can cause wandering, erratic steering and also severe tire wear. If a tie rod replacement is required then a wheel alignment will also be required because a tie rod replacement will alter the alignment setting.
Ball Joint Replacement
The ball joint, like the tie rod, is an extension of your steering and holds the steering knuckle firmly in place as your wheel bounces up and down and turns from side to side. Like a tie rod, the ball joint is usually a lube part - it does however wear out over time due to the stresses placed on the front suspension system. A loose or worn ball joint can cause handling problems since it essentially results in play in the wheel itself. Clunking noises, wandering, and overall poor handling are signs of a worn ball joint and/or a worn tie rod. Pay special attention to your tires - a worn suspension component, like a tie rod and/or ball joint, often results in uneven and premature wear of your tires. Inspect your tire tread; look for heavy, uneven wear. You can usually spot a worn out ball joint or tie rod before it becomes a danger to you and your passengers.
