The suspension of your car is designed to reduce and eliminate the bumps, vibrations and cabin noise related to driving your car.
The suspension of your automobile comprises several components; the primary components are shock absorbers, springs, struts and linkages which connect the frame of the car to the wheels.
The two basic functions of the suspension system are:
1. To keeps the car's wheels in a fixed contact with the road for ideal traction control.
2. To provides a smooth ride for passengers by insulating them from road bumps, noise and vibrations.
In normal conditions, the primary source of the suspension system's performance depends on the coil springs. The function of the coil springs is to support the car's body evenly by rebounding and compressing with every up and down motion. After every bump, swaying and bouncing is caused by the up and down motion of the car - shock absorbers provide additional insulation of bumps, sway and vibrations.
In vehicles that utilize struts, which are becoming more common, the shock absorber and coil spring are combined and provide superior ride, responsiveness and handling. Not only is the ride improved but the front end is kept aligned.
Failure or reduced performance of the suspension system can lead to steering system problems if not addressed. As soon as you start experiencing suspension problems you should repair or serviced as soon as possible as it ultimately works in coordination with the steering system.
Suspension repair may be necessary if you notice a change in the way your vehicle steers or rides. Another indication that you may need suspension service is vibrations in the steering wheel.
You should inspect your Suspension system regularly to ensure a quality ride and maintain safety. Check your shocks for cracks, leaks and other damage - a worn out or leaking shock absorber will make your vehicle bounce excessively. Also check the shock mounts to make sure they aren't bent or broken.
Signs that you may need Suspension Repair:
If your vehicle bounces abnormally or sways while cornering and hard braking causes the front of the car to dive you should immediately have your suspension system inspected.
If the front tire(s) of your vehicle show(s) uneven wear, you need to take it as an indication of worn out struts and/or shocks.
Note - You should always replace the worn out struts and shocks, in pairs. You don't want to create uneven suspension thresholds.
Now that strut suspension is available, there has been an elimination of the moving parts which has reduced the complexity of the suspension system. It is very important to maintain the suspension system by repairing and replacing its components regularly.
